PRESENTATION

  • A long history of cooperation has brought together librarians from the French graduate schools of business. Numerous exchanges and common projects have allowed them to create a broad network of information, education and mutual assistance. In 1993, an association was formed (ACIEGE, Association des responsables des centres d’information des écoles de gestion/Association for the directors of business school libraries).

The most commonly used documentation system is the Management Thesaurus. This is based on the work of Bureau Van Dijk and Georges Sandeau whose third edition dates from 1986. As of 1976, it was clear that constant updating was required to remain in step with the rapid evolution of the subjects covered by the Thesaurus. It also needed to be adapted to the increasing demands of teaching in business schools without neglecting the fact that future managers must be trained to seek to rationally use information.

The work group, composed of representatives from ten graduate business schools, guarantees a constant and carefully guided evolution of the thesaurus. Procedural rules ensure this : suggested modifications are examined during a semi-annual review meeting which then validates the creation or suppression of key words or equivalent terms, as well as the establishment of judicious links between terms. These operations guarantee that the Thesaurus will remain highly functional and up-to-date. Great care is taken to ensure coherence and a confirmed methodology.

Each semantic field was analyzed and entirely restructured. This is a living tool and must be particularly adapted to the use of informational resources in business schools.

The Management Thesaurus is now available in English, French and Spanish and in several formats.
We welcome any comments or suggestions that might help us to further improve future editions of the Management Thesaurus.
